They provide a roadmap for what is generally considered pleasant sounding and allows you a way to understand where you are in any given situation. Think of it like a road map, yes you can go off-road and that’s cool, but you generally learn how to drive first right? You don’t want a learner driver behind the wheel of a 4x4 on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, at least not without some assistance… When you understand scales, you begin to understand chords, and vice versa. It also helps to imprint a real sense of melody and harmony when building songs. An advanced understanding of scales can also provide insight into phrasing and arrangements i.e. how using one part of the scale affects the use of another part of the scale afterwards. An example of this is when resolving to the tonic, or building suspense with the 4th and 6th notes depending on the underlying chords. Another great example is when playing the blues, it can be really useful to play the major scale of that key e.g. A major and then turn it up by dropping into the minor scale of that key. With blues you can do this using a bebop scale regardless of whether the overall song is major or minor. Remember that scales are just tools, they’re simple guard rails that give you a good starting point so that you can go on to bend and break those rules. Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, Guthrie Govan, all of these players broke the rules and made new ones but first they knew which rules they were breaking and how to break them.
