The easiest chords to play are what is commonly known as power chords. This is when you play the root note and the 5th together and it sounds like rock and roll. So to play an E power chord you play the bottom E string, then the B (2nd fret) on the A string together.
I bet you’ve heard that one before!
The power chord for B (also written as B5), is another great power chord that can be played instead of a Bmaj barre chord. You can also get away with using this if you don’t want to play a Bmin barre chord.
The best thing about power chords is that you don’t really need to know anything about music theory at all, even knowing that it’s the root note and the 5th is superfluous information.
Here's a few examples of great songs that use power chords:
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Rollin’ In The Deep - Adele
Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Back In Black - AC/DC
