Which scales are the best

There are so many scales and modes that it’s almost impossible to answer this question. Also, how do we define best? Best for who exactly? If you’re intermediate then maybe start learning some modes and jazz scales. If you’re a beginner then we can stick to the more fundamental scales: major, minor, pentatonic (both major and minor), blues. Everything in western music stems from these fundamentals. In fact all of these scales stem from the major scale. Even the most common blues scale, known as the six-note scale or hexatonic, is just an evolution of the pentatonic but with a flattened 5th added to the minor pentatonic scale. Learning the notes of these scales is important for sure, but what is far more important is learning the sequence of intervals (or “scale formula”) and also inducing what I call the “burn-in effect”. The burn-in effect is what happens when you run these scales so much that your fingers feel like that is all they do and the melody burrows deep into your subconscious, to the point at which you can intuitively navigate songs by ear as you listen to them for the first time. This is much easier to achieve than most people understand. All you have to do is practice. It’s not the only way to gain this sense of music theory by ear, but it is the simplest and most predictable. Knowing the sequence of intervals for each scale type is the first step to applying any scale type in any key. Don’t know the 5th note of G Major? No problem, just count up your interval sequences: whole whole half whole whole whole half G (whole) A (whole) B (half) C (whole) D (whole) E (whole) F# (half) G We can see the 5th note of the G major scale is D. The next step is simply memorizing these notes, which is not as difficult as some might think. If you know your alphabet then you know music theory.
