The Clippers have been worse than a “little brother” to the Lakers in L.A. and around the world. L.A.’s second team has been anonymous on the court for most of their existence. They moved to Los Angeles from San Diego in 1984 and from that time until 2010 they were horrible. Sports Illustrated even dubbed them “The Worst Franchise in Sports History.” Then in 2010 the current turnaround began. There’s a misconception that the Clippers began to become a winning franchise once they got rid of Donald Sterling as owner but the revival began before that. Now with Steve Ballmer and a plan to build their own arena the Clippers have their eyes set on getting out of the Lakers’ shadow and overtaking them in popularity.
The Clippers jumped into high gear in a short amount of time by drafting Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan plus trading for Chris Paul. Lob City was formed before their recent change in ownership. Doc Rivers was on board as well under the front office leadership of Neil Olshey. They had some success but optimism ramped up when Ballmer purchased the team. The Clippers revamped their front office and traded all of the Lob City core.
Today they are second favorites to win the NBA title with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in Clipper uniforms. Ballmer has pumped financial support into the city of LA which can grab the loyalty of young fans and transplants who move to LA choose a “second favorite” team outside of their home squad and the Clippers are a becoming a more popular option. If the Clippers can build a dynasty they can see a similar popularity spike to the Golden State Warriors and the groundwork has been set.
