MACV-SOG WAS RESCUED: SIX HOURS IN HELL shorts

On May 2, 1968, Roy Benavidez, known as "That mean Mexican," heard a desperate cry for help on the radio in an area on the Vietnam-Cambodia border. A 12-man MACV-SOG team, which had been inserted by helicopters into a dense jungle area for a secret mission, was in trouble. They were outnumbered nearly 100 to one, and three helicopters had failed to rescue them. One of the team members was Sergeant Leroy Wright, whom Benavidez knew well and had saved his life just a month before. That's when Roy Benavidez boarded a helicopter, armed only with a knife, to rescue the ambushed team. Even without orders, he crossed the border into Cambodia and ran 75 yards under enemy fire to reach them. He was shot in the face and hit by shrapnel from a grenade, but he took command, organized the survivors, and led them towards the helicopters, continuing even when he was shot in the stomach and hit by more shrapnel. During six hours of intense combat, Benavidez carried wounded men, gathered critical materials, and fought in hand-to-hand combat, killing an enemy guerrilla with his own knife. He was stabbed or shot 37 times, and he was put into a body bag because they thought he had died. He saved at least eight men from the MACV-SOG. He received the Medal of Honor on February 24, 1981.
