The world is facing an extreme shortage of a number of electronic devices. The most prominent of such devices … at least so far… are gaming consoles and graphics cards. If you are an avid gamer or crypto currency miner, chances are you haven’t been able to buy the latest PlayStation and Xbox consoles or the fastest NVidia graphics card… at least not at their usual retail price. These devices are becoming difficult to produce and in future you may find it even harder to buy some other electronic devices. The reason behind this shortage can be summed up in one word – semiconductors. Semiconductors or microchips are chips of silicon that breathe life into the gadgets that make the modern world possible. From toasters to Teslas, chips are nearly universal components in just about everything with a plug or a battery. And the problem is getting worst by the day. Although Sony and Microsoft have sold more than 15 million units of their next-gen consoles since their launch in November 2020, millions of consumers still find it hard to get their hands on these devices. And the problem unfortunately doesn’t stop at the gaming industry. The shortage is hitting the auto industry as well. An average car today can have between 25 and 50 central processing units (CPUs) to provide the most safe, reliable and comfortable driving experience possible. Automakers expect to lose sales of around 7 to 8 million units in 2021 costing the global automotive industry a hefty $210 billion. The chip shortage could also mean a heavy blow for the power industry as well. While most options for renewable energy are made of steel or aluminum, a part of their inner workings is controlled or managed by electronic parts, like semiconductors and sensors.
