Sure, the champagne toasts are nice, along with the endless array of pastries and meats but this isn’t breakfast. This is a lovely, and decadent way to start putting nails in your own coffin. Skipping breakfast any day of the week is not so great for you either. Studies have shown that people who skip the first meal of the day tend to eat more calories throughout the rest of the day, and their bodies begin making hormonal changes that contribute to their continued overeating. This habit leads to obesity, diabetes, high-blood pressure, high-blood fats, inflammation, depression, irritable bowel disease, and more. But it’s not just the “make-up” meals, like that fancy brunch, which cause these additional health risks. It seems that skipping breakfast also increases heart disease, even when no additional calories are eaten throughout the day. A Harvard study found that people who skipped breakfast were 27% more likely to have unhealthy hearts. The lead researcher found that “prolonged fasting” – meaning not eating from when you go to sleep at night until well into the next day – every day – causes an increase in diastolic and systolic blood pressure, blood concentrations of insulin, triglycerides, free fatty acids and LDL-cholesterol, and decreases in blood concentrations of HDL-cholesterol. These are all the textbook risk factors for major heart trouble. Or maybe it’s just that little bite to eat with our loved ones before we head out into the wild and crazy world that we need. A little salve for our hearts that protects it against an onslaught of stress and worldly demands? Either way – eat a healthy breakfast full of plant proteins, healthy omega 3s and fresh fruits and vegetables, and you’ll be less likely to binge like a prison inmate presented with his last meal. You’ll also extend your life enough to enjoy sending time with people you love – another thing that’s good for your heart.
