What was the main reason for the United States's defeat in the Vietnam war? There are many factors explaining the United State’s defeat in the Vietnam War. However, there is one primary cause that saw the gorilla army of the Viet Cong achieve victory over the military powerhouse of the USA. Many argue that the U.S lacked a cohesive military strategy, including an inefficient Rolling Thunder bombing campaign and struggle to combat gorilla warfare tactics by insurgents. An example for this viewpoint is the 1968 Tet Offensive, the North Vietnamese’s surprise attack on more than 100 cities including Saigon. However, military incapability is false: the Tet Offensive was an operational victory for the U.S. that saw the military decimation of communist NLF forces. Instead, the real reason for the Offensive leading the North to victory is it’s undeniable propaganda victory. Support for the war from the start was already based on the battle for hearts and minds, this coordinated attack fuelled homegrown anti-war sentiment and political opposition in the U.S. thereafter causing the 1973 withdrawal. #War #VietnamWar #TheVietnamWar #TETOffensive #TheTEToffensive #MilitaryHistory #Vietnam #USA #History #QuickHistory #HistoryShorts #HistoryUncovered Thanks to the following for the use of their images...
