AMD's Ryzen 7 5700X CPU follows-up the R7 5800X, but at $300 instead of the original $400+ price-point. That puts the R7 5700X vs. the i5-12600K, primarily, but also AMD's own R5 5600. Sponsor: Buy Thermaltake's Tower 100 Mini-ITX case on Amazon (https://geni.us/TuAASGt) This review and benchmark of the AMD R7 5700X CPU tests the new AMD release vs. the R7 5800X, i5-12600K, R7 3700X, R7 2700X, the AMD R5 5600, the 5600X, and more. The CPU market has flooded recently as AMD has scrambled to counter Intel, and that's showing in the launch where AMD has spanned the budget market up to the mid-range. The high-end is still occupied just by the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X, but the company is currently working toward its launch of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (which we'll review soon, hopefully!). In this review, we're focusing on if the R7 5700X is worth it for gaming or for production applications, and where it makes the most sense. To us, the R5 5600 makes sense as the best middle-ground option for gaming as delivered by AMD, while Intel is still fighting hardest with its i5-12400 and 12600K. @802Garage2 years ago The crazy part to me is how close to 5800X performance the 5700X is while using HALF the Wattage. Wow! 501

@Zosu222 years ago Definitely a little late to the market for a product like this, but it’s a nice upgrade for someone with an older Ryzen CPU I suppose. These will probably get discounted regularly. 853

@theherrmann2 years ago I'm so excited to see the Gamers Nexus benchmark on the 5800X3D. I think it's really remarkable how you test all the meaningful use scenarios. 350

@shadowedsnipa2 years ago I would love if, for power consumption, there was a chart showing the total watts consumed by the CPU over its entire render cycle. For example, the i3-12100 had the lowest power consumption in the 5 minute blender test, but took approximately twice as long to render the GN logo in blender compared to the 5700X. I think it would be a better overall representation of power efficiency. ... 481

@Tbone_13372 years ago I think that the power efficiency should’ve been talked about more. I have a pc in a Velka 3 case, which the largest cooler it can fit is a Noctua L9. The fact that I can have an 8 core/16 thread behemoth in that case that draws less power than my current R5 3600 is insane ... 311

@foxdart2 years ago Thanks Steve, solid review. I started on a 300 series board with an r3 1400, snagged a 3300x and now I'll finish on the 5700x. I'll ride that cpu into the sunset just like my old Sandy Bridge before. 144

@autistpatrol24932 years ago upgrading from 2700 to this. did the mobo bios update on MSI.
Same power draw (important for an ITX Build), same Core Count, over 50% increase single thread performance over the 2000 series. Should last me another 4 to 5 years. I’m super happy with it! ...

@MightyMattTM2 years ago It’s absolutely nuts how only 1 or 2 of those CPUs is a quad core. I can remember when seeing a 6 core in review tables was astounding. 100

@SamanthaVimes1772 years ago Can't decide if I"m going to go far a cheap end of generation build or a cutting edge new one closer to the end of the year. Either way I'm finally starting to get exciting about building my first tower in years <3 Thanks for the great analysis as always GN! ... 6

One thing I would love to see, I've been building a flight sim PC for my grandpa and MSFS 2020 is a resource monster. @Shannon-ul5re2 years ago Great review thank you, I'm one of those people who was looking at buying the 15 2600k, which meant a complete system upgrade over the 3600. I sold my rx 5700 xt for $1200 in Feb, having been waiting for the prices to drop, in which they have and was able to pick up the r7 5700x with a rtx 3070, new keyboard and mice for $1300, today.. super happy for thee next few years and how the new gen plays out. ...

@eastyorkie19722 years ago I'm using 5800x, as like you said, getting hands on real CPU as apposed to waiting forever was the best option during pandemic.

@idhalaralbaiesh54292 years ago Very interesting review! can't wait to see what next gen puts on the table.
I have found these high-ish core count cpus very nice when you have to run two or three virtual machines at home for work, you need them to run well and still want to be able to use your host OS without pulling your hair out.
Got my 5800x when it was released because it was the only thing available at a normal price and had a lot of doubts about it, but can't be happier about the purchase after year and a half of use. I think I'll never again buy anything under 8 cores and 32 gb of ram.

@matthews22432 years ago I'm still running an r5 2400g, and it's nice to know I have an affordable upgrade path which will keep my system relevant for a few more years. The 5800x was just a bit too pricey for what it offered and the 5600x just wasn't compelling enough a jump in performance. This hits a nice sweet spot for my niche case. ... 28

@PoulWrist2 years ago It might not be a great NEW purchase, but I really like how you can buy these new releases and socket them in to a 5 year old motherboard and get modern performance if you bought a Ryzen 3 1600 back then while in school or in a budget slump. ... 8

@webby80052 years ago I love this comparison!! Thank you so much! I feel like just getting the R7 5700X is worth it to keep myself budget friendly with very minimal difference in performance.

@llobell862 years ago Great and rapid review. I do always miss a undervolt+pbo comparison with 5800X and 3700X. That way we would know better about the silicon (stepping) and its capabilities. A minus 0.0125mv to the vcore makes my 3700X gets 4.450Mhz, while much less heat, with PBO +100Mhz enabled. ...

@TheOswald042 years ago Great content with solid advice. I know this channel doesn't cover emulation but as a gamer I looked into affordable 8C/16T solely for RPCS3. @vmystikilv2 years ago AMD knew its market. I have a x370 with a 1700x. With the updated bios release and 5700x release, this was a no brainer choice to upgrade. Paired with a 6950XT, I hope to be quite happy for quite a few years. 17

@gersongaje79732 years ago I have a R5 3600 system and I think it is a worthy upgrade to switch to R7 5700x. Significant increase in core count and clock speed while being a 65w TDP chip. 53

@gamingvibrations53202 years ago Would be great to have a comparison of encoding while streaming and the relative performance in that use case vs the 5600x and 12600/12700, like you did with your Ryzen 2000-series review.
  • @
@3XOUT2 years ago Nice as always.
In regards to the 5800X everybody knows it tends to be running hot. I have it and it really does. So I truly hope you look into that as for the 5800X3D. I don't know if it's built in the same way as the 5800X. That's probably one of the top concerns as for me deciding if I should get that instead as a final hurrah for my X570 board (other than the actual performance ofc). And as there have been so much talk about it in general, then it would be weird if you guys, of all ppl, haven't included that aspect in that upcoming review. ...

@KingNekro2 years ago Could you test how the extra 2 cores over the 5600 might effect performance when multitasking during gaming? You know, things gamers would do on a 2nd monitor such as watching videos/movies, running chat apps like Discord, recording/streaming software(obs/xsplit etc), web browsing, etc
I know a lot of people who are constantly doing multiple things like that on a 2nd monitor while gaming, and it would be nice if I had some kind of frame of reference as to how those types of activities effect the performance of the game they play, especially when deciding whether they should buy a 6 core CPU vs an 8 core CPU.

@garbuckle30002 years ago Just picked up a 5700x today. I was running a 3600, and thought it would finally be a good time to upgrade. The 5700x fits the spot for me in that it still offers the extra cores/threads useful for multitasking with all the IPC improvements. And seeing as I intend to run this for another 5 years, it should be able to keep up with anything I throw at it in the future. Saves on power and $ over the 5800x, so no regrets here ... 10

@hardware_freak_on_a_leash2 years ago I am surprised GN did not mention the thermal differences between the 5800X and 5700X. @Gavrev5 months ago Cheers for a helpful review Steve! I seem to fall nicely into that sweet spot, being a light gamer/creative productivity user looking to "breathe more life.." as you say, moving up from my initial drop Ryzen 1600 CPU on an Asus B350-F board. It's all in the face of peak AM4, but I spent a lot of time grasping at pragmatism and found I couldn't justify the higher price and TDP for either the 5900X (£283) or the 5800X (£223) compared to the 5700X (£156) when I was able to pull the trigger on my purchase. Next up will be a GPU - as I see it, by laying the foundation with a more competent CPU (current PSU aside) I can now open the scope to a graphics card which won't be as compromised 😎👍 ...

@kylestewart44442 years ago I’ve been using a 3700X since it first came out. I was building my first PC at the time and decided on X570, 3700X and a 2070 Super.
That system has treated me well for a while now but I figured now was a decent time to upgrade it. I really wanted to get a 3080, like everybody else, when they were first released but wasn’t willing or able to go stand in line at micro center every morning until one became available and I certainly wasn’t willing to pay $1,500 elsewhere for what was supposed to be $700 card.
Anyway, last night I saw that the 5800X is marked down on Amazon to $229 so I went ahead and ordered one. And I finally ordered an MSI 3080 for $750. I didn’t really need to replace the 3700X. It’s still a great processor but I figured for $230, I may as well. Of course I would have preferred to buy a 4080 but the GPU shenanigans are still in full swing and I don’t want to pay $1,300 for one when I could have a 3080 for damn near half the price. I’m playing on a nice 1440p ultrawide that I don’t plan on replacing any time soon so the 3080 should suit me just fine. Especially considering the 2070 super, despite being nowhere near as good as the 3080, still served me well for the entire time I’ve been using it.
Unfortunately because of the shortages, I had to spend $1,000 in order to upgrade my pc with what are already 2 year old parts, which is not a great feeling. It’s not that I feel the need to have cutting edge hardware, it just sucks to have to stay a full product generation behind the curve strictly because of things like shortages, scalping, supply chain problems, etc. I know I’ll be happy with my “brand new” 2 year old system for a few years though, so I’m not gonna sweat it too much.

@scorntooth2 years ago Yooo! Have you guys ever considered inserting a price/performance graph? Maybe it's just a problem with me, but I find it hard to follow along sometimes-- when x product, costs whatever amount, for some percentage of performance. Having a slide for price/performance at the conclusion of all the test results, may help condense some of the content in other slides. Don't get me wrong, I'm an absolute certified GN FREAK! Love y'all! <3 ... 10

@extremederpz42702 years ago If only these came out a year ago, i can imagine someone having a system like the R7 5700X to an X570 motherboard paired with a 5700XT. 31

@NZHardhouser2 years ago $100 NZD difference in NZ at the moment, and that's after the reduction in 5800X retail costs recently. I wanted to like the 5700X - but after this review, I think I just might sit on my 3600 with a 4.6Ghz OC. I'm just a gamer and wanted to see if I would get any noticeable performance gain in say MSFS 2020 at 3440 x 1440 res - Im guessing its mostly GPU bound by that stage...
Thanks for taking the time to review this and your thoughts where it sits in the order for performance and bang for buck... Might grab one if they get discounted - but I doubt that this end of the globe...

@TH3C0012 years ago Oh boy, I could hardly wait for this one! I bought this on launch day as incentive to finally send in and replace my dead x570 board so I could use the two together. I promised myself I wouldn’t even open the box for this cpu until I replace the board, once all that’s taken care of I’ll be set and won’t need to upgrade for a good while unless it’s an upgrade to a new plaform entirely. ...

@xAuger2 years ago This will probably what I'll be jumping to from my 3600x, gonna try and stretch out am4 because am5 will probably be a little wonky at the start and its always best to wait and get the next gen. 11

@castcrus2 years ago I'm "upgrading" from a 3900x to 5700x because I don't use my PC for work as much as before, I'm now using it more for gaming. The 65w TDP will also give me less noise. 5800x3d is still asking for a lot of power, so I consider 5700x a better choice. I use a dark rock pro 4 for cooling, but I still don't like hearing it ramping up from time to time. ... 4

@ViktorBiohazardlast year I just got the 5700X from Amazon for 169 dollars. I'm upgrading from a 5 2600 and a GTX 1080. That was much more cheaper than change my B450 mobo for a new AM5 platform. 3

@kajijiKJJ2 years ago I sometimes see a lot of people saying it's a year late, but a year ago it took a month to book and buy even the 5600X because it was hard to get. It is a natural providence that if there is a limit to the amount of supply, it cannot be given.
AMD's breakthrough was great for fans, but sad for supply.
I'm happy with the 5600x I bought last year, but it's actually overkill. But strangely, you'll want a new CPU!

@kristianzavala26492 years ago Hey Steve, I see you did not mentioned the thermals of the 5700X, I do wish you could at least pin a comment down for everyone to see how it compares to a 5800X since It could mean the reason for choosing to upgrade unto one CPU over the other inside some cases that can run hot specially on hot tropical regions of the world like mine. Thanks in advance if you do reply. ... 7

@TalesOfWar2 years ago I went with the 5800X for the very reason mentioned here. It was literally the only one I could get. I was holding out for the 5950X stock to show up (and not at insane prices when it did) but it just took too long so I pulled the trigger on the 5800X. No regrets though, it's been a fantastic bit of kit and was a rather nice improvement over the 8700K it replaced! I'm good until at least the 2nd gen AM5 stuff launches at this point, unless they truly blow the doors off of everything with the first gen stuff! ... 13

@albertov61602 years ago I think adding a game that scales well with core would be really nice. If you take something like end-game satisfactory, you need more juice to keep everything running and from what I remember that game scales up to 8 real cores.
I don't know if that 100 bucks difference for the 2 cores would be worth it (talking percent wise), so it could be useful to introduce a title in the comparison chart for that

Thanks for covering it because if you hadn't I wouldn't have know about it due to the rather silent launch :D

@andrepotts78902 years ago This is great news for me. My daughter's 3570k system is starting to get long, and I went with a ryzen 3100 in my system as a hold over till cheaper ryzen 5xxx came out. 1

@fidobarks11642 years ago Microcenter had the 5800x at $299 and offered a $50 "new customer discount" bringing it down to $249 - That seemed like the right price for me to add to my B450 to replace my 2700x. I wouldn't have minded the lower power of the 5700x probably but spend a good bit of time in Blender so I like to imagine it goes a little faster for me. ... 5

@johnsteburg58802 years ago I'm looking more at the power consumption charts and how the CPUs fare doing professional tasks making the 5700X a valuable option in the real world work place we're pennies are pinced. Other than that if I was just a gamer the 5600 would be the way to go. Glad to see there is some great choices for those of us that prefer lower TDP and use air cooling. ... 3
