It's been 4 decades since the cultural revolution of Hip Hop reached our islands and it wasn't long before we localised the offshore expression with a flurry of fab releases from 1987 onwards. However, in 1985, a Hip Hop track on Y-One '85's "Half A Heart" album slipped under the radar and has avoided recognition ever since. Heads Down Tail Up captures the early electro rap vibe, featuring a quicker rework of the 'Beatstreet Strut' instrumental (from legendary movie Beatstreet) and slow rhymes about getting a move on with life. So, why the obscurity? This wouldn't have made it outside of the Christian music market, so mainstream coverage wouldn't have been in the picture. YFC label released annual albums with 'secular' appeal, often culminating in concerts, tours and outreaches. Whatever the take is on this, it's a nice nod to early Hip Hop and its local appeal.
