Here are five fascinating underwater discoveries. 1)The lost city of Thonis-Heracleion (Egypt) This ancient city, located off the coast of Egypt was once a thriving trade and commerce center. It was lost for centuries until archeologists led by Frank Goddio rediscovered it in the early 2000s. 2) The Great Blue Hole (Belize) The great blue hole is an underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It is one of the most famous diving sites. The hole is roughly 300m wide and 125m deep. 3) The underwater waterfall (Mauritius) The underwater waterfall is a stunning optical illusion as that of a waterfall flowing into the ocean. It occurs when sand and salt are carried by ocean currents. Mauritius is the 2nd largest island of the Mascasena Islands off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. 4) The Lost Mayan City of Xilbaba (Guatemala) This city was recently discovered by archeologists using high laser scanning techniques. The city has a reputation for being the city of terror. Xilbaba has impressive structures, including pyramids and an impressive palace. 5) The Black Sea Shipwrecks The Black Sea is known for its low oxygen levels. Over sixty shipwrecks were discovered in the black sea. In 2018, archaeologists discovered over 60 shipwrecks in the Black Sea dating as far back as the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The wrecks were well-preserved due to the Black Seas' low oxygen levels. So, there you have it, five underwater discoveries that lie beneath the surface of our oceans.
