Album:This Time Around Live in Tokyo Released:Sept '01 Recorded:15 Dec '75 Genre:HardRock Label:Purple(UK) Deep Purple MK4 was an awesome line up with Tommy Bolin stepping into some big shoes to replace Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple MKI, MKII, and MKIII.Tommy Bolin was a great choice for a new Deep Purple line up in '75/early '76.The man just had his own flare which is what Purple needed. Blackmore had his own flare as well, but Bolin had is own which would lead Deep Purple MKIV into a whole new territory of hard rock.Tommy's name came up when David Coverdale showed the boys Billy Cobham's Spectrum album. They were blown away!A guitarist with rock/fusion/jazz/blues/funk and reggae oriented styles that would push rock'n roll into new boundaries.Tommy Bolin was born in Sioux City, Iowa, USA Aug 1, '51, and began playing with a band called The Miserlous before he was asked to join another band called Denny and The Triumphs, in '64 at the young age of thirteen.Tommy Bolin was a talented session guitarist/musician for various groups such as Zephyr, Energy, Alphonse Mouzon, Billy Cobham, James Gang, Moxy, Deep Purple and his own band(The Tommy Bolin Band)completing two successful solo albums "Teaser" '75 and "Private Eyes" in '76.Come Taste The Band would be the only Deep Purple MKIV album, just coming out weeks apart from Tommy Bolin's solo album Teaser.Teaser was released in conjunction with the album Come Taste the Band by Deep Purple on which Bolin also played guitar.Upon its release on Nov '75, Teaser received considerable praise from critics. However, due to Bolin's obligations with Deep Purple, he was unable to promote the album with a solo tour and sales were affected as a result. There is a delicious Tommy Bolin "Teaser" jam taken from Deep Purple's On The Wings Of A Russian FoxBat Live Feb 27/Jan 26 '76 album that you should check out.Deep Purple would play a couple of Tommy's songs on their setlist during the Come Taste The Band '75-'76 Tour such as Wild Dogs and Homeward Strut.Tommy played his first show with Purple in Honolulu Hawaii Nov '75, and his last show at the Empire Theater Liverpool, UK March '76.Check out Deep Purple's live in Tokyo Japan '75 This Time Around rare official bootleg album/footage.You can hear Tommy struggling to play the guitar that night due to a floppy slightly paralyzed left or right arm due to hard partying and probably heroin or morphine use from the night before and falling asleep on his arm.The rumor goes that Tommy's guitars were tuned to open tunings so that all he had to do was to bar the chords with just a couple useful fingers rather than using his whole hand and fingers.Jon Lord's keyboards would cover up the rest of Tommy's poor playing.Listen to the guitar solo's at the show.Exactly, they are covered up with Organ solo's instead.Sad and unfortunately the show was being tapped that night.Deep Purple MKIV simply burned and faded out for the rest of the 70's due to David Coverdale's solo project which was the start of Whitesnake, Glenn Hughes's solo work/cocaine, alcohol addictions and Tommy Bolin passing away from a drug overdose in a Miami hotel on Dec 4, '76 at 25 years old hrs after his last show at the Jai Alai opening for Jeff Beck. Also check out Deep Purple's Last Concert In Japan album released in March '77 a year after Purple MK4 broke up and the album was strictly dedicated to Tommy a few months after his death. This version of Gettin' Tighter which is broken up into four parts when you think about it.1st part is the riff/song funky, heavy, and groovy. The 2nd part is Tommy's solo riff he would play with his solo bands/Energy "Cucumber Jam."The 3rd part is Glenn Hughes's funky soulful jam "I know that you love me.!(which I also like to mimic some of his funky bass guitar licks using my wah pedal while he uses his bass wah.)I also mimic Tommy Bolin's slide guitar screams to Glenn's squealing girly voice, sounds like they are both having a good time at that part. The 4th part is Purple's MK4 jam "Dance To The Rock & Roll" before going back into the song(Gettin' Tighter).Tommy using Hiwatt amp stacks, Sam Ash Fuzz Box, Phase pedal, Leslie speakers and the echoplex(which he uses to create his famous Ray Gun Effect).I believe Tommy Bolin was using '50's/'60's Fender Stratocaster’s(1 sunburst, 1 with a Telecaster headstock/neck in a natural orangey finish),Yamaha SX-1, Ultimate Hamer Stdr, '50's/'60's Gibson Les Paul with USA flag pickguard and a Bigsby tremolo bar(now owned by Joe Bonamassa).Ladies, Gentlemen, Deep Purple!
