Gulf Countries by Population in 2020 (1950 - 2020)

GULF Countries: What are gulf countries and why they are called so? Gulf Countries are 6: Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Bahrain. They are called so because they are members of the GCC. It’s a common misconception that they are named because they have coasts on the Gulf, they are actually named after the council, which was named after the Gulf. The phrase ‘Gulf Countries’ is actually a colloquial one, so is the GCC, although they are much more common than the official name: مجلس التعاون المشترك لدول الخليج العربية or The Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Gulf. Iran was never considered to be part of it. Iraq was considered in the late 1970s when the council was being formed. It was part of the negotiations but due to some political disagreements, Iraq pulled out. Since the name specifies Arab States of the Gulf, some assume Iraq is part of it, but it actually is not. Technically: Technically all countries surrounding Persian gulf (now it is called as Arabian Gulf) namely Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq & Iran are known as Gulf countries, as the name implies countries surrounded by these countries or countries having common boundary with this Gulf. However Politically & economically Iran & Iraq were excluded from GCC (Gulf co operation Council) from the beginning and Qatar also excluded in June 2017 from GCC.
