River Nile is the longest river in the world. It is about 6650 km long. It flows through 11 countries : Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ruanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenia, Ethiopia, Eritrea & Burundi. The Nile is an important economic river supporting drinking water & agriculture. The Nile has two major tributaries - the White Nile & the Blue Nile. Blue Nile is the source of most of the water of river Nile containing 85% of the water. Blue Nile starts from the Tana Lake of Ethiopia. White Nile begins at Lake Victoria. Blue Nile & White Nile formed together in a single river at Khartum of Sudan & flows to Mediterranean Sea through Egypt. A slow motion international crisis has been developing in the Nile valley since the Ethiopian government announced the construction of grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam ( GERD) on the Blue Nile in 1911. GERD will produce 6000 MW electricity for Ethiopian domestic consumption & for export to Sudan & another neighbouring countries. But the most concern of Egypt is the threat of a decreased water supply in Nile from it’s largest source. Egypt is facing severe shortage of water flow in agriculture & drinking water as well as economic crisis.Egypt is becoming more aggressive as it faces an economic crisis. As of April, 2023 Ethiopia announced that 90% of construction of GERD had been completed.
