Dairy farmer Fred Stone lost his license to sell milk from his family farm after detecting the presence of toxic "forever chemicals" in his cows' milk. Thanks to their bonds between carbon and fluorine atoms, these PFAS chemicals are extremely useful—and therefore extremely hard to get rid of. Not regulated by the FDA, they often end up in our water and food, including dairy milk. "Why in God's green Earth would you want to sell something that's contaminated?" Stone asks. "I had one person, honest to God, told me, 'Well you know, Freddy, you screwed up. All you had to do was keep your mouth shut.' There is no level there that is a safe level of contamination."
