Two male gorillas, 11-year-old Frank and 14-year-old Monroe, moved to a newly renovated habitat at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park this week. Their expansive home features a variety of amenities including trees, rock formations, and indoor/outdoor access so the boys can engage in a variety of natural behaviors. Wildlife care specialists made the decision to relocate Frank and Monroe after they began to increasingly challenge Winston, the Park troop's silverback, as they grew closer to reproductive age. Young male gorillas typically branch out from their birth troop between the ages of 10 and 15 to form bachelor troops or establish a family of their own, so Frank and Monroe's move aligns with great ape behavior in the wild. Frank and Monroe's care team spent six months ensuring they would be comfortable with the move, even giving them control to push the button that lifted their travel crates into the flatbed of a truck. The gorillas' successful relocation is a testament to the incredible trust, dedication, and expertise the primate team shares with Frank and Monroe.
