This is the Jamun Tree. The Jamun Tree is native to India and Indonesia. The Jamun can be found in all parts of India. It is an evergreen tropical tree. It was introduced in Brazil from India, during the Portuguese colonization. The tree lives for more than a hundred years. Its wood is strong and water resistant. That’s why the wood was used for making railway sleepers. The tree is planted for its green foliage, its wood and its pulpy juicy fruits. The Jamun usually flowers in March-April. Here you can see the delicate cream colored flowers of the Jamun. These flowers are favorite of bees. Swarms of bees descend on the Jamun flowers to collect its nectar. And the honey made from Jamun flowers is particularly medicinal. The fruits are called JAVA PLUM. The fruits appear around May-June when it is hot summer. The Jamun fruit helps diabetic patients. So, it’s also a medicinal plant. This work was supported by IUCAA and Tata Trust.
