Here’s a glimpse of Colin Savage, Head of Research, The Asian Banker, discussing the future of Standard Chartered Bank. With a new CEO, Bill Winters, a former leader in JP Morgan’s investment business, will the bank see improvement in their results? According to Colin, “while Winters is a well-known leader in investment banking, he is not the right man for the job. 40% of Standard Chartered’s business comes from consumer (retail), meaning that the new leader has little or no experience running a consumer banking business. Additionally, Winters has no experience in Asia (or outside Europe for that matter, having worked there since 1992), meaning that not only is he new to consumer banking, but about to run a business that has more than 67% of its business (operating income) coming from Asia (including India) and over 90% coming from Asia, Africa and The Middle East. Winters needs to come to Asia, learn how the consumer business works, avoid quick fixes (such as job cuts that his predecessor Peter Sands chose to do) and, alongside implementing a strong, long-term strategy, build an Asian, Middle Eastern and African team around him to truly be able to contend with the considerable challenges the bank has ahead of it.” SUBSCRIBE to our channel!
