(23 Jun 2021) German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday criticised a law passed by Hungarian lawmakers last week that restricts the information rights of young people with regards to content portraying homosexuality or sex reassignment. The law is considered important for right-wing conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban who cancelled his trip to Munich. Numerous German newspaper and broadcasters were displaying rainbow flags on their front pages, social media profiles or on-screen logos on Wednesday. It follows UEFA's refusal to let Munich illuminate the stadium for Wednesday's Euro 2020 match in rainbow colours in a show of support for the LGBTQ community. The decision by European soccer's governing body was widely criticised in Germany, which plays Hungary in the final group match in Munich. Left-wing daily taz showed an edited archive picture of the two teams' historic match during the 1954 World Cup final in Bern, but with captains wearing rainbow armbands and the caption "A dream: Germany-Hungary now in colour." The mass-selling tabloid Bild offered readers a double-page spread showing Germany's black, red and gold flag transforming into a rainbow flag.
