The title of 'Five round moons', comes from a Cherokee story I read decades ago about the full moons of winter. I wanted an Appalachian feel, dulcimer and banjo fit perfectly! But the story is of a child who thinks the trees are dead. Mother teaches the meaning of quietude in winter and the promise they are NOT dead, along with the hope of spring.
Oh Mama, my heart is sad
Down in the winterwoods the trees are dead
The leaves are gone and their bones stand bare
It makes me worrisome to go down there
Oh child of mine, do not dread
The trees in the winterwoods are not dead
They slumber softly awaiting spring
When the sun and warmth will dress them green
Chorus:
There are 5 round moons in the winterwoods
To keep them sleeping as they should
The long, long rest you soon will learn
Gives strength for growing when the sun returns
Oh Mama, but where has the warm sun gone
Down in the winterwoods it does not come
The cold and the dark it creeps in me
I cannot see their winter dream
Oh child of mine you must not fear
Down in the winterwoods, peace is near
There’s tenderness beneath the snow
Hush, and its beauty you will come to know
Chorus
The winterwoods have gifts to give
A time of stillness in which to live
The winter dreams are sheltered low
But in the heartwood the soul does grow
