Jungkook is the captain of his royal guard/military, as well as his childhood friend. As they were forced farther and farther apart by their respective duties, they realized they had feelings for each other. However, Taehyung was meant to marry a princess. A relationship with Jungkook is forbidden not only due to homophobia, but also because Jungkook has a dangerous job and could easily be killed, which isn't a good thing for a ruler. They keep their love a secret to avoid Jungkook being discharged from his position or possibly killed. At this point, rival kingdoms take advantage of a young and inexperienced king and wage war with Taehyung's people. Jungkook leads the army and is killed fighting on the front lines. Taehyung, who also fought (a king's people always support someone with military experience more), finds him bleeding out and tries to stop the inevitable, but there's nothing he can do. They win the battle, but Taehyung is devasted. In the last section, the colored scenes are when Tae hides behind a mask of indifference and pretends to be a dutiful king, while the black and white scenes represent the chaos in his head. Since no one knew about his love for Jungkook, he has no one to confide in, and also can't show people how destroyed he was by his death.
