(V)YUGOSLAVIA: KOSOVO: PRISTINA: K-FOR FAILS TO STOP PEOPLE LOOTING

(25 Jun 1999) Voice and effects During the NATO air bombardment, Albanians fleeing Kosovo spoke of Serbs looting Albanian-owned homes and businesses. Now the tables are being turned. Serb owned shops in the province's capital, Pristina are being raided and ransacked. There are reports, however, that both ethnic Albanians and Serbs are taking part in the looting. VOICE-OVER: (00.02) Looting of shops owned by Serbs in the capital of Kosovo continues. (00.07) Those who stole from this shoe store - children and young men. (00.11) The daylight thieves walking away with huge bags of footwear. (PAUSE TO LET PICTURES BREATH OF YOUNG MAN WALKING OFF WITH SHOE BAG) (00.17) There's reports that both Serbs and ethnic Albanians are taking part in the looting across Pristina. (00.23) But many Kosovo Albanians are also seeking revenge. (00.26) As refugees, fleeing the province during the NATO aerial bombardment, many accused Serbs of raiding their homes and business. (00.34) Commanders of K-FOR, the international peace keeping force, say they are doing all they can to keep the looters under control. (00.40) But because of the scale of the problem, K-FOR troops, have not been able to contain it. (00.46) SOUNDBITE: (English) "Right now we are limited to about 20-thousand troops within the country so we can't be at every site. But across the country we are trying to provide a presence by foot patrols, armoured vehicle patrols and within the cases we see looting we stop looting and detain the people who are doing it."
