Wadi Rum, also called the "Valley of the Moon", is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the most spectacular desert landscapes on earth. Its natural beauty draws visitors from around the world who visit for jeep safaris, hiking, rock climbing, ATV, and hot air ballooning. Or to follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia and see ancient rock inscription. The only permanent inhabitants are several thousand Bedouin nomads and villagers. There is no real infrastructure, leaving the area quite unspoilt. Apart from the Bedouin goat hair tents, the only structures are a few concrete shops and houses and the fort headquarters of the Desert Patrol Corps. Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures, including the Nabataean, leaving their mark in the form of petroglyphs, inscriptions, and temple. In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, also known as "Lawrence of Arabia", who passed through here several times during the Arab Revolt of 1916-1918. In the 1980's one of the rock formations in Wadi Rum, originally known as Jabal al-Mazmar, was named "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom," after Lawrence's book penned in the aftermath of the war. Though the 'Seven Pillars' referred to in the book have no connection with Rum. The genuine attraction of Wadi Rum is the desert itself, best seen by four-wheel drive, pick-up truck or on a camel. Some visitors only spend a few hours in the Wadi, but it's definitely worth taking a guided trip of several days duration, staying overnight in Bedouin camps in the desert. Four-wheel drives are less bumpy than the open-air pick-up trucks, but the latter have advantages when it comes to taking photos. The quality 4-wheel drive tour depends on a bedouin driver who serves as a guide, but often does not have much knowledge and poor English. Therefore, picking up a guide at the gate is a hit and miss affair and many of the best guides rely mainly on advance bookings. Its also possible in many cases to arrange a tour at the camp you are be staying at. You can usually make advance bookings through your camp, and this may be advisable given that some guides will only speak Arabic. Many of the camps have websites, through which you can also make reservations for your stay and tour. Always make sure that you and your driver/guide have a clear agreement on price and the itinerary and stops that are covered in the tour. Fans of the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia will be familiar with the landscape, as it was featured in it. Wadi Rum is everything you would expect of a quintessential desert, and have featured in many movies, not only in Hollywood productions depicting the planet Mars.
