GOTR CONVERSATIONS: Challenging Islamophobia was the first in a series of many free conversations Girls on the Run MN will be hosting for our participants, caregivers, coaches and the broader community. Did you know Minnesota is home to an estimated 140,000+ Muslims? Many Minnesotan Muslims were born here, while others hail from all over the world. In collaboration with CAIR-MN (Council on American Islamic Relations) this event discussed Islamophobia, which is the fear or hatred of Islam and Muslims, which continues to be a major issue right here in Minnesota. One of the first steps in addressing Islamophobia is teaching people outside of the Muslim community about it - what it looks like day-to-day and how the broader community can show up for our Muslim brothers and sisters with unity and respect. At Girls on the Run, our core values include embracing our differences and finding strength in our connectedness, and also standing up for ourselves and others. We believe in education and mutual understanding as we work to build a more inclusive Minnesota. This event is a chance for you to learn more about what Muslims in Minnesota experience and how we can each work to challenge Islamophobia in our own spheres of influence. This event's recording includes a presentation from the Executive Director of CAIR-MN, Jaylani Hussein, and a panel discussion to dig deeper into some personal accounts and testimonials of the effects of Islamophobia. Panelists included: - Aaisha Abdullahi, a Girls on the Run MN board member pursuing her Master’s in Public Policy at Duke University - Sahra Farah - a SEIU HCMN Organizer, Co-Host on @2keepitabuck a mental health podcast, and a freelance model - Bishara Mohamed - the Civic Engagement Manager at RISE (Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood of Empowerment) and a recent graduate from the University of Notre Dame with a Master's in Global Affairs and holds a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the United States International University-Africa - Zaynab Abdi - a MPA-DP candidate at Columbia University and previous Civic Engagement Coordinator with RISE Reviving Islamic Sisterhood Empowerment
