In 1582, the month of October suddenly lost 10 days, leaving many people puzzled and confused. This video explains the surprising story behind this event, and the introduction of the Gregorian calendar. The Julian calendar, which had been in use for over 1,500 years, was slightly too long and had caused the calendar to fall out of sync with the actual solar year. To fix this, Pope Gregory XIII ordered that 10 days be removed from the calendar in October 1582, and introduced leap years to better align the calendar with the solar year. Today, most countries in the world use the Gregorian calendar, making it an important part of our daily lives.
