Comet C/2006 P1 (McNaught) in NASA/STEREO HI-1A

This is the spectacular comet C/2006 P1 (McNaught) as seen by our SECCHI instruments on the NASA STEREO spacecraft in January 2007. These images were recorded just a week or so after we turned them on for the first time (launch was in Oct 2006). The comet itself is obvious, the bright object entering from the right near the end of the sequence is Mercury, and the one in the lower half is Venus. Plenty of stars can be seen in the background.
