Its inhabited areas form a tri-armed valley cut by the Nubra and Shyok rivers. Its Tibetan name Ldumra means "the valley of flowers". The Nubra valley tour starts with crossing the Khardung La pass, the world’s highest motorable road. Khardung La pass connects Leh to the Nubra valley and it is strategically important to the Indian military force to carry supplies to the soldiers posted at the Siachen glacier near the India-Pakistan border. The Nubra valley itself lies at an altitude of 3,150 metres above sea level (it is lower than Leh). Diskit monastery is the largest gompa in the valley, it was built in the fifteenth century on the side of rocky hill. It offers a spectacular view on the valley. A gigantic 32-metre-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha is located a few hundred meters away from the monastery. Ten kilometres after Diskit, you can enjoy a double-humped Bactrian camel ride at Hunder sand dunes. Hunder is a place that stands out for its different and unique desert landscape. More than being a natural wonder, this beautiful cold desert village in the Nubra Valley will take you by surprise with its breathtaking natural beauty. Unlike most of the tourist spots of Leh that are characterised by snow-capped mountains, Hundar, sitting at an average altitude of 10000 ft, takes the pride of being one of the world’s highest deserts. Hundar, famous for Bactrian camels and sand dunes, is a place that you should not miss visiting during your Ladakh trip. It once served as the capital of the former Nubra kingdom. The primary attraction of this village is the sand dunes. Most visitors come here to enjoy camel rides too. Famous for the Bactarian camels that had come to Ladakh during the silk route for trade purposes, you can now enjoy a camel ride for 15 minute or an hour when here.
