Epilepsy warning: Rapid camera presses to reduce lag. This star is made much faster by B swimming speed conservation. When Mario swims using B, he can't gain speed past 7, but he can conserve up to 16 speed. Therefore, for some stars, it's worthwhile to build up speed. pannenkoek2012 demonstrated that this could save time ( /watch/wvZEcInGmTLGE ). Iwer Sonsch found good triangles to use for this in the previous ABC WR for this star ( /watch/AvTkjm4nCBonk ), hyperspeed walking along one slope and hyperspeed punching along the next. Iwer conserved 15.44 B swimming speed, and I was able to get it to 15.52. There's actually another pair of triangles that can be used to get more speed ( /watch/ozcmQBwmU7-mm gets 15.58, and more is likely possible) but it's too far away to be worthwhile. The swimming speed buildup also happens to give a sliding speed vector that lets Mario reactivate it onto land after the swimming is over. Then he uses misalignments to climb the boxes and reach the deck to grab the star. A tricky aspect of this star is lag reduction. (Note: The 1'21"27 is according to Mupen lag.) Mupen's lag emulation is far from accurate to console lag, but since we can't TAS on console, I tried to reduce Mupen lag (though not at the cost of logical frames). During the swimming part, Mario's joystick inputs have the same effect regardless of the camera, so it wasn't too hard to play around with different camera movements. I just TASed all of the swimming (with the help of an automated optimization tool) and then changed the camera presses without changing the joystick. For the air movement parts, though, I had to redo the joystick inputs a couple of times for each section. I'm sure the lag reduction is improvable with respect to Mupen lag, let alone console lag. To make matters more confusing, RNG seems to affect lag, at least according to Mupen. I suspect it's because of bubbles that spawn on an RNG basis.
